Blue Flag Beaches
Visitors to Westport and the surrounding area can enjoy a wide selection of sandy beaches on the north and south shores of Clew Bay.

The Blue Flag Campaign is the most widely known award for beaches throughout Europe and beyond. It is awarded to beaches with excellent environmental management standards and Westport and Mayo are particularly well served in this regard, with fourteen beaches in the county awarded the accolade in 2006. 

Two of these, Bertra and Old Head, are situated within 20 minutes drive of Westport just off the road to Louisburgh.  Alternatively, Achill Island, an hour’s drive north of the town, was the proud recipient of the Blue Flag Award for beaches at Dooega, Dugort, Keel, Keem and Golden Strand in 2006.
