Magic of Christmas Season Come To Ireland's Tidiest Town !
Hundreds of twinkling fairy lights will spring into life this weekend in the town of Westport,
Co. Mayo - which this year won the title of 'Ireland's Tidiest Town' for the second year! At 8pm
on December 2nd crowds will gather under a glistening winter night sky, to watch as the town is
illuminated and it is declared that the Christmas season has officially begun! Children will gasp
as before their very eyes the trees, Georgian buildings and meandering streets of Westport will
glow from the light of a rainbow of dazzling coloured bulbs.
The ceremony, which will include performances by Westport Choral Society and the Town Band, will
be presided over by Tereasa McGuire, Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, who will be present
to turn on the lights for the expectant crowds at St. Mary's Church, situated on The Mall
Westport is a favourite destination at this time of year, whether for a weekend-away or a day-trip,
as the town also hosts a very special Christmas Market on Saturdays in December - the atmosphere is
cosy and festive as visitors sample warm minced pies, mulled wine and hand-made chocolates. All kinds
of hand-made crafts, organic food and beauty products, jewellery and other treasures can be found on
the holly-decorated stalls of the market - perfect Christmas presents! For more information on events
