The Pubs and bars of Westport
Westport’s friendly and varied pub scene draws people from all over Mayo, all over the country and all over the world. There are late pubs, quiet pubs, live-music pubs, famous pubs, wine bars, cocktail lounges, pubs with open fires, sports pubs, party pubs, traditional pubs and even pubs that are also corner shops. Whatever your leaning, you won’t be stuck for a watering hole that suits you.
Westport’s hopping live-music scene is as varied as the town’s bars. Some bars specialise in one kind of sound – like The Jester, which has a rock vibe, or The Cobbler’s and Matt Molloy’s, which tend to stick with trad sessions. Others shake it up a bit, like McGings, where it could be folk one day, jazz the next and rock another.
For those who want to party to the small hours there are a number of late bars and nightclubs to choose from. The Castle Late Night Venue on Castlebar Street is a regular, year round nightclub, while Cosy Joe’s on Bridge Street opens later than most of the other bars in the town and has a DJ.
Nice and quiet
Prefer a quieter sup in a pub where you can hear your buddy talk, and yourself think? Then head to Toby’s, Moran’s, McGing’s (on a week night) or MacBrides and settle yourself into a snug or onto a high stool.
Soak up the sporting atmosphere in Henehan’s, Danny’s, the Jester, The Grainstore, The West and McBrides, all of which have screens and sports fans galore.
