History and Heritage
The heritage town of Westport is one of the few planned towns in the country and boasts a rich and fascinating history. It is an estate town, built to the plan of James Wyatt, a well known architect of the Georgian period, who is credited with such outstanding features as the elegant tree-lined boulevard, known as The Mall.
The history of the development of Westport, from the time it was an O’Malley stronghold in the 16th century, to the present day, is brought alive in the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, located at Westport Quay. The town's past is traced back to its origins, including connections with the Browne family of Westport House, whose own history has been interwoven with Westport for more than half a millennium.
