Westport’s Acoustic Yard Music Festival
Mundy, The 4 of Us, and more singer-songwriters than you can shake a guitar at!
The third Acoustic Yard Music Festival takes place from Friday, May 11, to Sunday, May 13, and this year’s line-up is jam-packed with singer/songwriter talent, from the well known to the up-and-coming. Headlining the 2018 line-up are Mundy and the 4 of Us, while 30 singer/songwriters from Ireland and beyond will perform around the town in bars, cafés and open-air locations.
The roots of the festival can be traced to The Acoustic Yard – a monthly singer/songwriter session in the Yard Bar of Westport’s famous Matt Molloy’s Bar. Here, musicians were given a platform to perform their own songs, while appreciative audiences got the chance to hear original music in a relaxed environment.
FRIDAY May 11th
The fun kicks off at 5 pm on the Friday with ‘Music at the Clock’, an outside event at the Clock Tavern, featuring some of the acts involved in the festival – think impromptu open-mic session, only organised…
In the evening, Irish songwriting legends The 4 of Us will perform in the Clock Tavern Restaurant at 8 pm, with support from acclaimed Mayo band Vickers Vimy.
SATURDAY May 12th
On Saturday, between 12 pm and 2 pm, there will be a busking competition around the town with a €250 prize for the winner. The competition is open to everyone as long as they play original compositions. If you’re in town, and you fancy taking part, you can sign up on the day – be outside The Clock Tavern at 11.30am and raise your hand!
That afternoon, at 2 pm, there will be a free concert with some of the best new emerging acts including The Finns, Billow Wood and the talented Sina Theil outside the Clock Tavern. Then, at 4 pm, local troubadour extraordinaire Tony Reidy will host The Clew Bay Folk Club in Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar, with the theme of the event being ‘Your Favourite Songwriter’. All are welcome to drop by and appreciate the tunes.
A Songwriter Club will start at 6 pm upstairs at Blouser’s Bar on James’s Street, with a workshop, discussions and impromptu performances.
In the evening, at 8 pm, acoustic-folk pop-rock favourite Mundy will perform with support from alt-folk musician Peco. Mundy is one of a number of Irish artists to successfully make the transition from street busking in Dublin to international stardom, while Kildare-born, Dublin-Based Peco (Peter Mc Loughlin JR) will complement the Offaly star with his similar rock, pop, Americana sound.
SUNDAY May 13th
On Sunday, May 13, The Wild Atlantic Women, a collection of female singers from Donegal will perform around Brewers’ Place (off Bridge Street) in cooperation with The Gallery Wine and Tapas Bar at 3 pm.
The afternoon will also include a performance from two of Ireland’s brightest lights in the singer/songwriting field, Ciara O’Neill and Sara Ryan.
Later in the day, at 6 pm, Brian Hassan will be singing songs from his new album ‘Tales from Home’ at The Quay Cottage. Expect chilled music and fabulous food.
The Acoustic Yard Festival will go out on a high with a special concert by Coda. The Westport-based all-male seven-piece a capella group will be performing songs from their new album ‘Train of Spirits’ at Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar.
Special guest Galway singer/songwriter Ultan Conlon will also play on the night, performing songs from his new album ‘Last Days of the Night Owl’. Conlon’s single ‘The Measure’ recently topped the RTÉ Radio 1 Airplay Charts.
