The Westport Festival of Chamber Music will take place from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th September this year. Concerts will be held in Westport House, Westport Town Hall Theatre and Holy Trinity Church.
Artistic Directors, violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney have invited return visits from violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and violist Eivind Ringstad with newcomers to Westport cellists Adrian Brendel and Isang Enders, clarinettist Julian Bliss and pianist Daria van den Bercken. They will be joined by Irish pianists Finghin Collins and Hugh Tinney, violist Simon Aspell and cellist Miriam Roycroft. Mairéad Hickey who gave the Next Generation concert at the first festival in 2013 is a welcome return participant. Alex Petcu (marimba) together with soprano Kelley Lonergan will perform in the Saturday late concert. This year’s Next Generation Artists Concert will feature Fiachra de hOra (viola) with Aidan Chan (piano).
The repertoire ranges from Bach’s seminal Goldberg Variations (arranged for string trio) in the intimate surroundings of Westport House to an exciting trio by American composer Paul Schoenfield in the main Saturday evening concert. Following the opening concert in Westport House on Friday evening, Saturday’s busy programme in the Town Hall Theatre will provide three concerts at 11.30am, 8pm and 10.30pm in the Town Hall Theatre. Sunday will return to Westport House for the 11.30am concert and the final concert at 2.30 will take place in Holy Trinity Church (allowing travellers to catch the evening train).
Each concert is designed as a stand-alone event; together they will provide a memorable week-end of music. Full details and booking are available on the Festival’s website www.westportchambermusic.ie
Funded by the Arts Council and supported by RTE Supporting the Arts, the Festival is grant-aided by Mayo County Council and Fóras Éireann.
