Its delight all round for the staff and management of the Westport Hotel Group on the back of 3 fantastic achievements in the space of just one week!
The Castlecourt Hotel has achieved an unprecedented occupancy of 100% for the month of August while the Westport Plaza and the Westport Coast reached 99% which is a very positive sign for tourism in Mayo. This achievement is in no small part to the reduced tourism VAT rate of 9% which was introduced in 2011. The measure has greatly improved the competitiveness of hotels in Ireland and allowed for the creation of additional employment which is vital for the local economy. In fact since the introduction of the reduced VAT rate, the Westport Group has created a total of 81 jobs and increased its workforce to 461. Speaking at the news of this result, Marketing Manager Ciara Joyce complemented the hard work and commitment of the Reception, Reservations and Marketing Team.
On Sunday night 6th September the Restaurant Merlot at the Westport Plaza Hotel was crowned the winner for the second year running of the “Secret Supper”, the flagship event of the Westport Food Festival. This novel idea saw diners gather in the Clock Tavern for a drinks reception where they were allocated one of 13 local restaurants in Westport in which to dine, while in each restaurant, chefs were busy preparing a five course meal which had an emphasis on using as much local produce as possible. Restaurant Manager Julie Manager was delighted to accept the award and complemented the hardworking waiting staff and the chefs. She expressed delight in accepting the coveted award for the second year running and said it was extra special to receive the recognition from the locals who are such important customers to the Westport Hotel Group.
The Courtyard Bistro in the Castlecourt Hotel were unveiled as the Connacht Hotel of the Year by sporting hero Katie Taylor in front of a packed house at the Great Carvery of the Year Grand Final in Dublin on Tuesday last 8th September.
Great Carvery is the No 1 Carvery competition in Ireland and celebrates the very best that the traditional pub and hotel carvery has to offer. Speaking at the final, Business Development Chef at Unilever Food Solutions, Mark McCarthy said: “This year, the standard of entry to the competition was incredible. Each year, the bar gets set higher in what has become a very exciting competition and it’s great to see new entrants each year’’.
