Westport, the Cocktail capital of Ireland!!

Two of Westports Cocktail Mixologists;

Scoop joint third place at the National Cocktail Championships 2014!

Master cocktail makers Kevin Kennedy and Owen Hughes scooped joint third place at the National Cocktail Championships 2014 and both are a familiar sight behind the bars of Hotel Westport and Knockranny House Hotel & Spa.

 

The dynamic duo graced a gathering of the great and the good of the Irish foodservice industry at FOOD & BEV LIVE 2014, one of the biggest industry gatherings of the year.

 

Sponsored by Edward Dillon & Co. Ltd and open to all bartenders working in Ireland, the National Cocktail competition was staged by the Bartenders Association of Ireland (BAI) and this year’s brief was to specifically create a ‘long drink’. One of 36 finalists, Owen and Kevin wowed the judges with their creations.

 

Both men are no strangers to awards, Kevin is the current Havana Club Grand Prix Irish Champion and goes on to compete in Irelands Most Imaginative Bartender Competition later in the year while Owen was the Overall Winner of the 2013 Finest Call Cocktail Mixology Competition.

 

Just the one, so”, Owen’s winning creation, can be enjoyed in the Bar at Knockranny House Hotel while Kevin’s “French Concoction” can be enjoyed at the Maple Bar in Hotel Westport

 

 

Cocktail Recipe – “Just the one, so”

 

Ingredients: 35ml Grey Goose La Poire Vodka, 10ml Amaretto di Saronno, 35ml mango puree, 10ml lemon juice, 2 dashes plum bitters, ginger ale

 

Method: This one’s nice and easy, just combine all the ingredients (excluding the ginger ale) in a cocktail shaker, shake well, pour over ice into a 30cl glass and top with ginger ale.

 

Cocktail Recipe – “French Concoction”

 

Ingredients:   40ml Grey Goose La Poire Vodka, 25ml St Germain Elderflower Liqueur, 15ml lemon juice, 5ml Maraschino liqueur, 40ml grape juice, 25ml soda, 10ml egg white.

 

Method: ‘Dry Shake’ all ingredients except soda without ice to emulsify egg white.  Then shake with ice.  Pour on a tall glass with Ice.  Add soda and enjoy.

 

N.B. Don’t be afraid of egg white in a drink, it adds a beautiful foamy and velvet mouth feel.
