Meanwhile the 2014 guide to the top courses in Ireland, which was published by “top 100 golf courses of the world “, Westport improves its position to 47th in the top Irish golf course guide.
The location for the 17th National Golf Tourism Conference and 2014 Gala Irish Golf Awards will be Westport, in association with Fáilte Ireland and the 2014 tourism initiative the Wild Atlantic Way. Minister Michael Ring in making the annoucement said: “I am very pleased to announce that the 17th National Golf Tourism Conference and the 2014 Gala Irish Golf Awards will take place in Westport, from Saturday, October 18 to Monday, October 20th. The bid to host these events was managed by Mayo County Council and I wish to thank the county council and all involved in preparing the bid for their work. You may think it will be difficult for next year’s conference and awards to surpass this year’s event, but I have no doubt that you will enjoy all Mayo has to offer and I look forward to welcoming everyone to Westport next year.” The IGTOA National Golf Tourism Conference and Gala Irish Golf Awards is the largest gathering of golf tourism industry professionals across the island of Ireland and it will also attract delegates to the North West of Ireland from Europe and North America in October 2014.
Westport Golf Club is no stranger to supporting tourism initiatives as was highlighted by there unique Gathering event in 2013. The golf club was awarded a certificate of acknowledgement signed by the Irish President Michael D. Higgins and was congratulated by Minister Michael Ring for their contribution in cementing Mayo’s position as the county with the third highest amount of Gathering events. Westport Golf Club highlighted just how important their Gathering of Golfing Insomniacs event was as part of the clubs marketing strategy this year. “A paragraph mention in a travel feature in Forbes magazine and an interview with Hector on 2FM certainly sent out the message that Westport golfers were mad…….mad about golf” commented Paul O’Neill who spearheaded the Gathering campaign down in Carrowholly.
The club has also recently been adjudged ‘Best Parkland Course in Connacht’ by Portside Media publishers of the Golfers Guide to Ireland. The awards scheme recognises leadership roles played by Irish Golf Clubs and associated golf interests on the whole island of Ireland. All awards are won on the basis of an all Ireland poll undertaken from within the golf and golf related business community. ‘At a time of considerable stress within the sector’ said Portside Media Director Paddy McCarthy ‘golf providers as much as anyone else need moments to lift spirits and celebrate all that is excellent in Irish golf. This evening’s awards reflects our wish to recognise individual achievement by those involved in our industry”. Westport Golf Club who received the award back in 2012 also were joined on the night by representatives of Ballinrobe Golf Club who secured the ‘best hidden gem in Connacht’ award. Westport Captain Joe Carty summed up the the Carrowholly club’s achievement by commenting “this welcome accolade affirms Westport Golf Club’s status as a golf course of exceptional pedigree. A must visit for the discerning golfer in 2014.For more information check out www.westportgolfclub.ie
