Keenagh Loop

Westport Newport ➤ Lough Feeagh ➤ Newport ➤ Westport

The Keenagh Loop is 76.6 kilometres of pleasant cycling that takes you North as far as Crossmolina Parish. Although it may appear to be a relatively flat and simple route, the surrounding landscape is anything but. As you ride out of Newport at the 10 kilometre mark, the road snakes its way between Furnace Lough and Lough Feeagh. Once you leave the Lough’s behind, you’ll pass through Wild Nephin National Park, and the commanding presence of Nephin mountain will make itself known to you as you pedal onwards towards the foot of this 806 metre-tall mountain.

The steepest gradient on this route maxes out at 10.7% just before the halfway mark, and the reward for reaching the crest of that climb is a 6 kilometre descent, before you turn right back towards Newport. This road back into Newport is also richly surrounded by lovely pockets of woodland. The home stretch back into Westport is a nice pleasant ride along the Greenway, so take it at your own pace and watch the world go by as you roll along into the town, you’ll have plenty of thinking time to decide where to head for dinner that night!
