Top Family-Friendly Days Out in Westport This Summer

As the summer sun bathes Mayo in its golden glow, Westport transforms into a playground of adventure for families seeking memorable experiences. With its stunning views of Clew Bay and the majestic Croagh Patrick looming in the background, Westport offers an abundance of activities that will delight visitors of all ages. Whether you're locals looking for new weekend traditions or visitors planning your Mayo adventure, we've crafted three perfect itineraries to make the most of Westport's family-friendly attractions this summer.

Morning: Begin your day with a family-friendly cycle along the Great Western Greenway. With bike rentals available throughout town (Clew Bay Bike Hire offers trailers and child seats for the little ones), this traffic-free cycling path follows the route of the old Westport to Achill railway line. The gentle gradient makes it perfect for young cyclists, while the spectacular scenery will keep everyone engaged. Start at Westport and cycle as far as Newport (11km) – just enough to work up an appetite for an ice-cream before the journey back to Westport!

Lunch Break: Refuel at any of the fantastic eateries in Westport. Some of our favourites are Maddens at The Clew Bay Hotel, Currys Cottage and where the cosy atmosphere and delicious family-friendly menu will please even the pickiest eaters. After lunch visit Marlene's on James Street. Their hot chocolates are legendary – the perfect reward for hard-working young cyclists!

Afternoon: Head back to Westport and spend the afternoon at Westport Estate. There is so much to do here from Westport Adventure where you can face challenging adventures, and immerse yourself in unforgettable outdoor activities, to the Interactive Gaming zone where you can experience the thrill of a life-size video game where you become the ‘joystick.’ It’s video gaming meets sports and fun.

Evening Wind-Down: Head to The Helm for some of the finest seafood in Westport for dinner (they open for dinner from 5pm) and then stroll down to the Harbour Stores to get one of their locally famous Buzzy Blizz. Take your treats for a leisurely stroll around the Pond at The Quay or walk down to The Point to catch amazing views of Croagh Patrick and maybe a memorable sunset.

Seafaring Adventure Day

Morning: The Adventure Islands have fantastic activities to make your visit truly memorable. Why not experience the thrill of the open sea with our exhilarating Sea Safari adventure or Wild life tour! You will embark on an unforgettable journey that combines the excitement of a high-speed boat ride with the wonder of wildlife encounters and scenic exploration. Suitable for families 8 years plus.

Lunch Break:
As you make your way back to Westport you can stop for lunch in town. Check out any of the local eateries on the main streets to satisfy the hunger after the sea air from the morning's adventures!

Afternoon: Once lunch is on board back into the car to make a short journey to Louisburgh for some stand up paddleboarding in Old Head.

Evening Treat: After your seafaring adventures, Westport Coast Hotel at Westport Quay is the perfect spot for an early family dinner. Their children's menu goes beyond the usual fare, and parents will appreciate the locally-sourced options.

Rainy Day Rescue

Morning: Don't let Mayo's changeable weather dampen your spirits! Begin at Westport Leisure Centre, where kids can keep themselves entertained in the large pool. The W Cinema is conveniently located right beside the Leisure Centre and often has Kids Shows during the holidays.

Lunch Break: After working up an appetite in the pool, head to McHughs where the creatively named sandwiches like "The Gobble Gobble" and "Ya Mad Cow" will have the kids giggling while they refuel. Their hot chocolate menu is extensive enough to please even the most discerning young connoisseur.

Afternoon: Spend your afternoon wandering around Westport. There are so many shops to suit all ages, great bookshops, toy shops, clothes and shoes. Something for everyone!
