Seventy-Five Years in the Making: Mayo Are All-Ireland Champions

There are moments in a county's story that need no introduction, and for Mayo people everywhere, this is one of them. On July 26th, 2026, in front of a heaving Croke Park, Mayo beat Kerry to win the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, their first title since 1951. Seventy-five years. Three generations. Countless heartbreaks in between. And finally, the wait is over.

For anyone not from Mayo, it's hard to explain what those years meant. This wasn't just a long losing streak, it was a story passed down at kitchen tables and in pub corners, told by grandparents who remembered 1951 first-hand to grandchildren who'd only ever known the near-misses. Mayo had been to more All-Ireland finals than most counties dream of and walked away from every single one of them without Sam Maguire. It became a kind of shorthand, "the Mayo curse", said with a wince and a knowing smile. Not anymore.

The homecoming told its own story. The team came back to Mayo by train, and by the time they reached MacHale Park in Castlebar, the crowd numbers had blown past every estimate organisers had planned for 30,000 to 40,000, something closer to 50,000 turned up. Gates opened at 3pm, Sam Maguire arrived with the team around 6pm, and the whole place stayed in full voice long after. The team have visited nearly every corner of the county by bus and even a helicopter trip and here in Westport we've been lucky to have them on a few occasions. Each time they have been welcomed with joy, song and a party that has gone on long into the night.

Seventy-five years from now, someone in Mayo will tell this story to a grandchild who can't quite believe it took so long. For now, though, there's just one thing left to say: Mayo, All-Ireland champions, 2026. Say it as many times as you like — it never gets old.
