What to Do in Westport

Kildavnet Castle, on Achill Island, was Granuaile's fortress guarding the entrance to Achill Sound, linking Clew Bay to the south and Blacksod Bay to the north.

Killary Harbour is Ireland’s only true fjord and extends 16km in from the Atlantic to its head at Aasleagh, below Aasleagh falls. It forms the border between Galway and Mayo and boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the West of Ireland.

Mayo's hundreds of pristine beaches, from small sheltered coves to vast expansive strands, are some of the best in the country, if not the world.

Nephin is the second highest mountain in County Mayo and the 36th highest in Ireland. It dominates the local lanscape.

The Nephin Beg range dominates the skyline, looking north from Clew Bay. The Bangor Trail passes through the range, and the Letterkeen Loop is in its midst.

There are three loop walks, each beginning from Nevins Newfield Inn, about 11km West of Newport. Each loop has fine views of Clew Bay and cross the Great Western Greenway four times.

Cong Forest Nature Trail is 3.8Km long and a lovely walk steeped in history and nature. You will see forests with 100 year old trees, Cong Abby and the surrounding caves.

The Clew Bay Bike Trail is a new bike and ferry route looping magical Clew Bay, curving around the coastline, incorporating both Clare Island and Achill Island.
