7 Cosy Things to Do in Westport on an Autumn Day

7 Cosy Things to Do in Westport on an Autumn Day

Destination Westport Planning Guide - Local inspiration, practical advice and unforgettable experiences to help you plan your perfect visit.

There is a point every autumn when Westport changes gear. The evenings draw in, the fires are lit and the town settles into its cosiest season.

If you are looking for cosy things to do in Westport, you will not have to look far. The town centre is compact, so a slow coffee, a spa afternoon, a long lunch and a night of music can all fit into one unhurried day.

Here are seven of our favourite ways to spend an autumn day in Westport, whatever the weather is doing.

 - Destination Westport

1. Start Slow with Coffee and Something Fresh

A cosy day starts with nowhere to be. Westport is full of cafés and bakeries where you can take a window seat and watch the town wake up.

The Front Room at The Mariner on Mill Street, a few yards from the Clock, has won awards for it's breakfast! From free range poached eggs to buttermilk pancakes, a hearty full Irish breakfast to grilled kippers (and everything in between) breakfasts at The Mariner are the perfect way to start your day. For more ideas, have a look at our local's guide to the Westport food scene.

2. Browse Behind the Colourful Shopfronts

Westport's streets were made for wandering. Behind the colourful shopfronts on Bridge Street, Shop Street and around the Octagon you will find local shopkeepers, bakers, artists, producers and craftspeople.

It is the kind of browsing that fills an hour without you noticing and a good way to bring home something that was made close by. If the rain settles in, the Clew Bay Heritage Centre at the Quay tells the story of the town from pre-Christian times to today, complete with a scale model of Westport. Check opening times before you go.

3. Book a Spa Afternoon

Few things feel better on a cold day than a warm thermal suite. Westport is well served for spas, and each one has its own character.

  • Spa Sula at the Westport Plaza and Castlecourt Hotel Resort has a thermal suite with a salt grotto, sauna and steam room, plus an outdoor jacuzzi rock pool.
  • Spa Salveo at Knockranny House Hotel has a vitality pool and thermal suites.
  • Spa Veda at the Westport Coast Hotel brings Ayurvedic traditions to the Quay, with experienced Indian therapists.
  • Beech Spa at Westport Woods Hotel & Spa is tucked away in a quiet, secluded setting.
  • The Grace Spa & Wellness at The Grace, Westport Estate offers tailored treatments and calming spaces.

Treatments fill up at weekends, so book before you travel and ask each spa about day visits.

4. Linger Over a Long Lunch

Autumn is the season for lunches that run on. Maddens Bar & Restaurant at the Clew Bay Hotel serves local food from land and sea, and Park Terrace Wine Bar at the Wyatt Hotel is a good spot to settle in on the Octagon.

Down at the Quay, The Helm Bar & Restaurant cooks with locally sourced ingredients and looks out over Clew Bay. Take your time. Nobody is rushing you.

5. Learn Something New in the Kitchen

For a day out with a difference, book a class at Cabots Cookery School in Aughagower. This family-run school teaches warm, personal classes using locally sourced ingredients from the West of Ireland, in a setting that overlooks Kinlooey Lough.

Courses range from classic French and Italian kitchen cooking to Vietnamese street food and bread-making. It is outside the town, so you will need a car or a taxi and classes need to be booked ahead. Well worth the trip!

6. Catch a Show at Westport Town Hall Theatre

Westport Town Hall Theatre sits right on the Octagon and runs a year-round programme of theatre, music, comedy and arts events. The Theatre Bar opens onto a balcony over the Octagon, which is a lovely place for a drink before the curtain goes up.

Autumn is a busy season on stage, so check What's On in Westport and book your seats early.

7. Find a Fire and a Tune

No cosy day in Westport is complete without a seat by the fire. Our guide to pubs with roaring fires in Westport will point you to the best hearths in town.

When the music starts, you are spoilt for choice. Matt Molloy's on Bridge Street is known for its trad sessions, JJ O'Malleys Bar & Restaurant, also on Bridge Street, has music seven nights a week, and Petie Joes at the Castlecourt Hotel has live music every night. There are more ideas in our top five live-music pubs in Westport.

Local's Insider Tips

Book the big things first. Spa treatments, cookery classes and Saturday night dinner tables all go early.

Leave the car where it is. Much of this list is within a short walk of the Octagon, and the Quay is a short taxi ride away.

Dress for the walk between stops. A warm coat and a hat mean the weather never decides your day.

Check What's On before you travel. A gig or a show can turn a good evening into a great one.

Stay the night. A cosy day is better when the walk home is a short one.
